New Hours of Service Exemptions Approved

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) recently approved exemptions for two types of loads. Drivers hauling either live bees or oversize/overweight loads are now permitted to skip their 30-minute breaks.

Bee Hauler Exemption

Bee Hauler Exemption is valid through June 19, 2017 and is intended to protect the health of bees and reduce risk of injury or death if the hives get too hot.  When the truck is constantly moving, it provides air flow to maintain a safe temperature. Only interstate drivers are covered under this exemption and once the bees have been offloaded, the drivers are again mandated to take their breaks.

Oversize/Overweight Load Exemption

Oversize/Overweight Load Exemption is valid through June 18, 2017 and is intended to protect the public. Due to difficulty of finding parking, drivers often park on the shoulder of the road, creating an obstacle in the lane of travel. To reduce risk of creating a road hazard, any driver hauling a load that requires a government permit for exceeding size or weight regulations is eligible to skip the 30-minute break.
