House of Representatives Denies Amendment To Increase Insurance Requirements for Truckers

Members of the U.S. House of Representatives responded on June 4, opposing an amendment that would have cleared the way for an increase in insurance requirements for small-business trucking and bus companies. House lawmakers voted 175-248 on the amendment, denying it so it could not be added to the full Transportation, Housing and Urban Development (THUD) bill.

The Owner Operator Independent Drivers Association (OOIDA) stated that FMCSA’s data shows that more than 99 percent of crash damages are covered under the current requirements. OOIDA and other industry groups also told Congress that raising insurance requirements, the initiative based on increases in medical inflation would not make highways safer.
